Don’t misunderstand me, as I’m not preaching the value of proprietary codecs. Despite Theora's shortcomings with rendering speed and overall playback quality in comparison to proprietary alternatives, this does not mean that all open source codecs are loosing ground in the fight for your video viewing freedom.

See the vast difference between Youtube's horrible transcoding codec and the same video using Apple's far superior H.264 codec (now also being used by Adobe Flash). There is no comparison in my mind, Youtube gets it wrong and the video quality suffers immensely, far too many jaggies, blocks, pixelation. The Flash is nearly as good as the orig.

There are two parts of the comparison - 2006 year results and over-years comparison. First part is comparison of modern codecs, provided by developers in this year. Second part is summarizing of H.264 codecs results over three previous years.
Short version of report is now available at website for free download (52 pages, 47 figures).
